Nature of Work

The purpose of this job is to perform preventive maintenance, inspection and repairs to a variety of types of automotive, medium and light motor equipment with a variety of gasoline and diesel engines. Responsible for preparing work orders and the requisition of parts and equipment for repair

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description

  • Performs maintenance and repair of Police vehicles including unmarked detective vehicles, some hybrids, mobile command vehicles, urban assault vehicles and marked cruisers
  • Maintains and repairs other City vehicles for a variety of departmental functions
  • Diagnoses and repairs all systems, i.e. electrical, hydraulic, steering, braking, engine systems and transmissions, etc.
  • Fabricates, installs and repairs of auxiliary equipment, i.e. compressors, plows, spreaders, generators, equipment trailers, etc.
  • Performs related work as required

Minimum Training and Experience

Required Education and Experience

  • High school diploma (or GED equivalent) with training in automotive/heavy equipment/light equipment, gasoline or diesel engine repairs

--AND--

  • At least two (2) years of related work experience performing automotive/heavy equipment/small engine mechanical repair and maintenance; and/or state certifications

--OR--

  • Any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities

Preferred Licenses or Certifications

  • ASE Certification Preferred

Knowledge of:

  • English grammar, spelling, punctuation
  • Modern office procedures, methods and computer equipment
  • Standard practices, methods, theory, tools, materials and equipment of the automotive and mechanical trades.
  • Principles of operation of internal combustion engines and the characteristics and maintenance needs of a variety of light and medium gasoline and diesel automotive equipment and motor vehicles
  • Occupational hazards connected with vehicle maintenance and repair and of relevant safety standards and precautions.
  • Equipment repair specifications

Skill in:

  • Interpersonal skills necessary to develop and maintain effective and appropriate working relationships
  • Performing a variety of duties, often changing from one task to another of a different nature
  • Performing basic mathematical functions such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages, and ratios
  • Diagnostics, troubleshooting and repair of electronics issues

Ability to:

  • Meet schedules and deadlines of the work
  • Understand and carry out oral and written directions
  • Accurately organize and maintain paper documents and electronic files
  • Maintain the confidentiality of information and professional boundaries
  • Use manuals and equipment to perform inspections, and adjustments, and to diagnose defects and maintenance and repair requirements in a variety of maintenance and construction heavy equipment as well as in general automotive equipment
  • Use and maintain bench and hand tools, and test equipment of the automotive and mechanical trades in a safe, efficient manner.
