Nature of Work

An Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Technician performs highly skilled technical work to support a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system. This role provides seasoned dual-skillset technical and electronics support responsibilities to maintain a highly secure network for public transportation and safety. Work assignments are broad in scope and require the use of seasoned judgment to make complex technical decisions. Work must adhere to both departmental policies and organizational best practices for network configuration and management. Major technical or policy problems are discussed with a superior before acting. May oversee work of contractors and vendors on assigned projects.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides broad high-level technical support to maintain a Transportation Management Center and Advanced Traffic Management System.
  • Installs and maintains network components such as network switches, routers, broadband radios, and cellular routers.
  • Monitors and troubleshoots network stability and performance, conducts failure analyses of components.
  • Programs and troubleshoots traffic signal controllers.
  • Performs minor repairs on electronic equipment and provides troubleshooting assistance to other personnel as required.
  • Installs and maintains software for traffic management, adaptive traffic control systems, automated traffic signal performance measures, vehicle detection systems, emergency vehicle preemption and transit priority systems, connected vehicle systems, utility damage prevention and other needs as required by the department.
  • Maintains up-to-date documentation and writes technical support documentation for network systems and applications.
  • Recommends, tests, and implements system and security upgrades.
  • Creates, adjusts, and maintains network user and software settings and permissions.
  • Maintains current working knowledge of industry best practices for network components.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Training and Experience

Required Education and Experience

  • Associate’s degree in computer information systems, or manufacturing and applied technology, or related field.
--AND --
  • Four (4) years of directly relevant experience in computers and electronics; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
-- OR –
  • An equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provided the required skills, knowledge and abilities.

Required Licenses or Certifications

  • Possession of a valid Michigan driver's license.

Preferred Licenses or Certifications

  • Cisco Certified Support Technician (CCST) certification.

Other Necessary Qualifications

Knowledge of:

  • Network topology and security, including wired and wireless networks.
  • Troubleshooting and repair of Ethernet switches, broadband radios, and cellular routers.
  • Traffic signal timing parameters and settings.
  • Principles and techniques of fiber optic cable terminations and splicing.
  • Principles of electronics.
  • The Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).

Skill in:

  • Microsoft Windows operating system.
  • Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Windows command line (DOS).
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2008 and forward.
  • Cisco switches and routers.

Ability to:

  • Work from sketches, blueprints, instruction manuals, circuit schematics; both oral and written instructions.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, representatives of local agencies, contractors, vendors, and the general public.
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Provide oversight to other personnel, contractors, and vendors on relevant work tasks.
  • Work outdoors in all weather conditions.
