Job Description Overview:
- Provides leadership and direction for all auxiliary operations, ensuring efficient, customer-oriented, and financially sound service delivery.
- Ensures that auxiliary departments first deliver key products and services to the college’s core business (academic instruction, athletic, and co-curricular activities in a residential setting), then generate net income to the college via sales of remaining capacity.
- Ensures that auxiliary departments strategically manage several customer lists and align them with other areas of the college (especially Admissions and Philanthropy) for ethical lead generation.
- Works with auxiliary department leaders to develop annual budgets for each auxiliary unit; monitors financial performance and identifies opportunities for increased revenue or cost savings.
- Coordinates services and schedules with Physical Plant, Campus Safety, Admissions, Philanthropy & Engagement, Academic and Administrative departments, and other areas of the college to align auxiliary services with student needs and campus priorities.
- Benchmarks similar auxiliary units in higher education. Benchmarks applicable businesses outside of higher education. Uses knowledge gained to shape strategy and performance of college auxiliary enterprises.
- Oversees vendor and third-party service provider relationships, including contract negotiation, performance monitoring, and compliance with college standards and policies.
- Drive student success and retention by leading and inspiring auxiliary teams to create meaningful, student-centered experiences – both directly and indirectly – through the delivery of accessible, affordable, and high-quality services.
- Championing student employment as a high-impact practice that fosters engagement, skill development, and a sense of belonging, while ensuring auxiliary operations actively support wellness, reduce financial and logistical barriers, and enhance the overall on-campus experience to promote academic persistence and graduation.
- Cultivates a positive, inclusive, and results-oriented team culture by empowering staff through mentorship, open communication, and clear direction, ensuring a culture of collaboration aligned with departmental and campus goals.
- Invests in the growth and engagement of staff by providing professional development, timely feedback, recognition, and succession planning to strengthen internal talent pipelines.
- Promotes accountability, customer service, and continuous improvement by supporting managers and staff with proactive leadership, resources, and training that drive bold outcomes and departmental success.
- Fosters mutually beneficial cross-campus partnerships between auxiliary enterprises and other revenue-generating departments—such as Housing, the Frost Center, and Hope Repertory Theater—to strengthen collaboration and drive shared success.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Hospitality Management, Public Administration or similar degree preferred, and/or small business experience of supervising $5M-20+M in revenue and 30+ staff members.
- Minimum of 5–7 years of progressively responsible experience in auxiliary enterprises or related operational management.
- Demonstrated experience in budget management, contract negotiation, and vendor relations.
- Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
- Ability to develop and execute sales plans that lead to income growth above inflation and ideally higher than traditional investment returns.
- Ability to work collaboratively across departments and lead teams effectively.
- Proven record of building and maintaining trust among stakeholders, team members, and external relationships.
- Understanding of how to combine effective business strategy and financial performance to higher education culture and student-centered service delivery.
- Innovative, growth-driven mindset with the ability to identify new net income opportunities and improve operational efficiency.
