Nature of Work

The purpose of this job is to provide legal services on issues and projects of importance to the City.  Depending on assigned area(s), this job may involve litigation, municipal affairs and/or ordinance enforcement.  Position will involve an introductory level of autonomy and depth of knowledge, with increased skill and expertise over time.  
 
There are currently two openings in the Department of Law, one opening within the General Civil Litigation Division and one opening within the Prosecution/Enforcement Division.  A brief description of each is below.  

Examples of work within the Municipal Division: 

  • Research, investigation, interpretation of ordinances and statutes.
  • Preparation of legal memorandum.
  • Drafting of policies, ordinances and transactional documents.
  • Advisement of City officials, staff, boards, committees and commissions where required.
  • Collaboration on Department of Law projects and initiatives
Examples of work in the Civil Litigation Division: 
  • Acts as trial and appellate co-counsel handling litigation duties. 
  • Assists with investigation and processing of personal injury , workers compensation, contract, civil rights and property. 
  • Assists with complex tax petitions and litigation.
  • Collaboration on Department of Law projects and initiatives.  

Examples of work within the Prosecution/Enforcement Division:
The current opening is in the Enforcement Division of the City Attorney's Office. Specifically, this position involves the City's prosecutorial duties and assists with the prosecution of civil infractions and misdemeanors issued pursuant to the City Code. It is expected that an employee serving in this role will report to the Director of Legal Affairs and assist with criminal matters tried in the 61st District Court and the Circuit Court Family Division.

Minimum Training and Experience

Required Education and Experience
  • Juris Doctorate
--AND--
  • At least three (3) years of experience as a licensed attorney 

Required Licenses or Certifications
  • Licensed to practice law in the State of Michigan, or licensed in another state with the ability to become licensed within a reasonable time
