Electrical Supervisor

Position Title: Electrical Supervisor

Advertised Salary: $72,000 - $78,000 Salary commensurate with education, experiences, and other requirements. Comprehensive benefit package (health care, vacation, etc.)

Summary of Position: Responsible for the 7200 volt distribution system. Supervise and coordinate work activities of the Electrical Department engaged in assembly, installation and repair of equipment related to electrical operations. Maintenance and renovation of University facilities including but not limited to, distribution systems, battery systems, emergency lighting systems, preventative maintenance, generators, etc. Serve as project manager providing oversight for contracted and in-house construction and renovation projects. Oversight and responsibility for campus conveyance systems (i.e.,elevators, lifts, etc.)

Required Education: High school diploma or GED equivalent.
Required Work Experience: Five years of experience in the electrical field with quantifiable experience in industrial, commercial, residential and maintenance work.

Demonstrated work experience in medium and high voltage electrical distribution maintenance/repairs, maintenance frequency, procedures, etc.

Three years of supervisory experience directly related to the electrical trade with emphasis on high voltage and distribution systems.
Required Licenses and Certifications: State of Michigan Master Electrician license.

Valid driver’s license.

Additional Education/Experiences to be Considered: Associate’s degree or higher from an accredited institution, preferably in electrical engineering, management, or related field.

Knowledge of electrical theory principles as they apply to electrical circuits, wiring systems, power, and distribution. Familiarity with power plant operations.

Understanding of occupational hazards associated with voltage distribution equipment, current limiting devices, etc. to prevent Arc Flash.

Management and/or maintenance experience associated with conveyance systems.

Proficiency with Word, Excel, electronic work order and timekeeping systems.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities: Supervise and schedule master, journeyman, and apprentice electricians, and student workers assigned to the department.

Assign jobs, evaluate work of department staff for code compliance, workmanship, and quality.

Coordinate with other department supervisors for the expeditious completion of work.

Approve department employee vacations, sick leave and personal leave requests to maintain an appropriate level of response within the department to meet campus needs.

Respond to emergency situations and direct the activities of the work force (365 days a year, 24 hours a day).

Maintain overtime list, pager list, time cards and labor distribution information as necessary to provide accuracy of the CMMS work order system.

Provide support to engineering and project management work groups related to maintainance and construction projects.

Inspect/audit electrical storage and equipment areas to ensure the safety and security of the facility and equipment.

Attend meetings, provide memos and follow-up documentation as necessary.

Attend seminars and acquire additional electrical training with approve to enhance knowledge and abilities.

Administer and ensure compliance with work rules and union contracts.

Monitor work progress, efficiency of the department staff, and compliance with safety procedures.

Ensure conformance with all applicable electrical and building codes.

Review work order requests, schedule labor, place orders, and receive materials.

Analyze project requests for labor, time, and material needs and provide cost estimates when required.

Interact with vendors to stay abreast of new products and contractor work performance.

Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with applicable laws, codes, regulations and University policies.

Reports directly to the Director of Operations.

Responsible for creating, maintaining, scheduling and implementing preventative maintainance standards as they apply to electrical and conveyance equipment across campus.

Responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of designated information.

Supervise employees in the Electrical Department, Elevator Mechanic, and student workers as assigned.

Update and maintain electrical department standards and specifications.

Demonstrates an understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion, especially in working relationships with students, faculty, staff and community members.

Any other duties assigned within the position classification area.
Marginal Duties/Responsibilities:  
Skills and Abilities: Ability to organize, schedule and supervise employees in the work force.

Demonstrate fully, knowledge of the National Electrical Code and other codes as applicable to the trade (i.e., NFPA).

Demonstrate working knowledge of high voltage systems.

Establish and maintain effective interpersonal relationships, communicate effectively both orally and written.

Evaluate the performance of department staff and assess the skill levels of employees to meet the goals and maintenance objectives of the department.

Knowledge of the safe operation of personnel lifts, bucket trucks, and digger derrick trucks.

Perform basic mathematical functions with accuracy.

Possess basic computer skills.

Provide estimates (labor and material) to assist with the development of project budgets/timelines.

Read and interpret constructions drawings/prints, charts and job specifications.

Understand and administer union contracts with proficiency in labor relations.
