Summary: The Department of Mathematics at Grand Valley State University invites applications for an Assistant Professor of Mathematics Education to begin Fall 2026. Applicants are expected to have a doctorate in mathematics education or a closely related field. The position will be full-time, 9-month, tenure-track and specializing in PK-6 teacher preparation within a department that has 10 math teacher educators with specializations ranging from early childhood to secondary mathematics. Individuals from all backgrounds, including from underrepresented groups, are encouraged to apply. Successful candidates must be able to effectively engage with students, colleagues, and community members with a broad range of backgrounds and experiences.
Required Qualifications and Education:
• Ph.D. or Ed.D. in Mathematics Education or closely related field/ Ph.D. or appropriate terminal degree. Current ABD candidates will be considered for a two-year contract with the provision that the Ph.D. must be completed by December 2027.
• Potential for successful college-level teaching in mathematics teacher education
• Commitment to contribute to the PK-6 teacher education program (Pedagogical Content Knowledge for Elementary Teaching, or PCKET)
• Commitment to incorporate field-based learning experiences into mathematics teacher education courses
• Evidence of critical, reflective thinking about the teaching and learning of mathematics or teacher preparation
• Demonstrated potential for and commitment to maintain a productive program of scholarship in mathematics education.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, such as the ability to interact with others with respect and cultural humility.
Preferred Qualifications and Education:
• PK-6 or 5-12 teaching experience
• Curriculum development and/or scholarly interests at the early childhood, elementary, middle or high school level
• Grant participation, curriculum development, pre-service teacher education, or in-service professional development related to elementary mathematics.
• Ability to work in a collaborative environment.
• Ability to teach non-PCKET math courses offered by the math department (middle grades or high school mathematics education courses, or foundations mathematics courses)
• Interest in teaching community-based mathematics education courses, embedded at local partner schools where at least 40% of the courses are taught in collaboration with partner elementary teachers
Responsibilities:
Tenure-line faculty in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences are typically hired on nine-month contracts, with a nine-credit hour teaching load per semester. They are also expected to engage in scholarly/creative activity, service, and a significant focus, which is equivalent to three credit hours of additional responsibilities in teaching, scholarly/creative activity, and/or service depending on the successful candidate's interests, the department's and PCKET program needs. The successful hire will be expected to engage in the teaching and ongoing development of mathematics courses for elementary pre-service teachers. Newly hired faculty are normally expected to have their 3 credit hours of significant focus be scholarship. Department faculty are expected to maintain a productive program of scholarship and to participate actively in the life of the department. Employment begins August 6, 2026.
Minimum Starting Salary: $72,370; commensurate with experience.

Department: The Mathematics Department at Grand Valley State University serves over 700 students in the PCKET program with 130 choosing a math concentration for grades 3-6, 140 math majors, 300 minors, and 9500 students annually in its classes. Our students are actively engaged in learning through small classes that emphasize critical thinking, creative problem-solving, effective communication, and a high level of faculty support.
