Summary: The Department of Anthropology invites applications for an 18-month, non-tenure track Visiting Assistant Professor position in biological anthropology to begin teaching on January 12, 2026, for the Winter 2026 semester and continue into the 2026-2027 academic year. Geographic area and specialization are open, but candidates are expected to teach introductory courses in biological anthropology. In letters of application, candidates should discuss their interest in developing as a teacher in an undergraduate liberal arts university that emphasizes close student-faculty interaction.
Required Qualifications and Education:
• ABD in Anthropology from an accredited institution
• Experience teaching biological anthropology to undergraduates
• Strong interpersonal skills, such as the ability to interact with others with respect and empathy.

Preferred Qualifications and Education:
• PhD in Anthropology from an accredited institution completed by the start of the Winter 2026 semester
Responsibilities:
• Visiting Assistant Professor will teach four courses per semester in Winter 2026, Fall 2026, and Winter 2027. Possible courses include Human Origins and Methods in Biological Anthropology.
Salary/Benefits: The salary is $50,000 per year.

Department/College: The Anthropology Department (https://www.gvsu.edu/anthropology) consists of 9 full-time faculty and several part-time instructors with a commitment to excellent undergraduate teaching and research. This four-field department offers both an Anthropology major (BA and BS) and minor, while also contributing substantially to the General Education Program, teaching four Foundation courses, nine Theme courses, ten World Perspectives courses, and two U.S. Diversity Courses. The Anthropology Department is part of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. The Anthropology Department also participates in the interdisciplinary archaeology minor with the History Department and the Classics Department.
