Summary of Position: • Perform skilled trades work in repairing, installing, diagnosing, and maintaining heating, ventilating, air conditioning systems, refrigeration and associated equipment on University property.
• These positions are located in Big Rapids, MI and the current anticipated shift for the positions will be M-F, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm.
• Assignment requires the availability to work weekends and evening shifts as needed and respond to emergency calls.
• Required to carry pager.
Position Type: Staff
Required Education: • High school diploma or GED equivalency.
 
Required Work Experience: • Two years of work experience in commercial, industrial, and/or residential HVACR.
Required Licenses and Certifications: • Possession of Certificate of completion in Universal Application of Refrigerant Transition.

Additional Education/Experiences to be Considered: • An Associate’s degree in a related field.
• Current State of Michigan Mechanical Contractor’s License, 1-7.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities: • Estimate material and time requirements for assigned work.
• Maintain assigned tools, equipment and work area in a neat, organized and clean non-hazardous environment.
• Demonstrates an understanding of diversity, equity and inclusion, especially in working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members.
• Support, promote, and develop University student enrollment and retention initiatives.
• Maintain, inspect, test, adjust, repair, alter, install, and operate all environmental systems, devices, and controls, including fume hood systems and process air systems.
• Maintain, inspect, test, adjust, repair, alter, install, and operate all refrigeration systems, devices, and controls, including ice arena process equipment.
• Maintain, inspect, test, adjust, repair, alter, install, and operate water treatment for various types of open and closed systems.
• Perform scheduled and unscheduled preventative maintenance to all HVAC & R equipment and devices.
• Prepare records and service reports.
• Requisition materials and parts, communicating with suppliers and technical support.
• Stock, maintain and operate a service vehicle in a neat, organized and safe manner.
• Troubleshoot malfunctioning systems and controls; test components using mechanical, electric, electronic and chemical testing equipment.
• Maintain safety and security of equipment, vehicles, keys, tools, materials, and inventories.
• Maintain safety, health, and quality standards in all duties and responsibilities.
• Reports to immediate supervisor.
• Train and oversee the work of other employees in the performance of the characteristic duties.
• Carry out these responsibilities in accordance with University policies and applicable laws.
• Operates university motorized vehicles in a safe manner while performing job duties.
• Communicates timely and relevant information to management and others.
• Any other duties assigned within the position classification area.
Marginal Duties/Responsibilities: • Assist in or perform work on other mechanical systems as needed.
• Train and oversee others in the performance of the characteristic duties.
Skills and Abilities: • Communicate effectively with students, staff, faculty and visitors.
• Demonstrate extensive knowledge of applicable ASHRAE and EPA rules and regulations.
• Experience working directly with people from diverse, racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
• Direct and train others in the performance of the characteristic duties.
• Erect and work from ladders, scaffolding, boom truck, and related devices.
• Have considerable knowledge of applicable building code rules and regulations.
• Keep and maintain accurate records.
• Maintain University standards of good workmanship in both quality and quantity.
• Perform mathematical computations with a high degree of accuracy.
• Perform skilled work in all HVAC&R-related duties.
• Read, understand, interpret, and follow blue prints, sketches, schematics, specifications, directions, safety labels, equipment operations manuals, etc.
• Understand and know methods, materials, tools, equipment, occupational hazards, and safety precautions of the HVAC&R trade.
• Understand systems and their proper operation.
• Understand, use good judgment, and follow procedures established through safety training and the Facilities Management Safety Manual.
• Utilize computer/iPad to access facility controls and to perform other required duties.
• Utilize proper technical procedures and techniques.
• Work harmoniously with and direct others in situations of variable temperatures, occasional noise, and stressful workloads.
• Work independently.
• Work with least amount of inconvenience to all people involved.
