This position based in Southeast Michigan, is an integral part of the Thompson & Charter Scholars team, providing personalized guidance on college readiness, financial aid, and scholarship opportunities. This role supports students and families within GVSU-authorized charter schools through workshops, advising, academic coaching, and on-site visits, helping students navigate the transition from high school to higher education.
SALARY & BENEFITS
Salary range: $45,000 - $50,000; commensurate with experience

PRIMARY DUTIES
• Assists students and families within GVSU-authorized charter schools in Southeast Michigan with applying to institutions of higher education. This includes providing workshops on writing admissions essays, completing FAFSAs, requesting transcripts, applying for scholarships, and how to navigate higher education successfully.
• Coordinate with GVSU-authorized charter schools to recruit students to participate in the Thompson UPREP Program, College Prep Week, campus visits, and overnight experiences at Grand Valley.
• Host orientation sessions in Southeast Michigan for charter school students who have committed to Grand Valley.
• Work closely with the Thompson Scholars team to promote and encourage students to apply to the Thompson University Preparatory Academy Scholarship and the Thompson Working Families Scholarship programs.
• Coordinate volunteer opportunities for scholarship recipients of the Thompson University Preparatory Academy Scholarship.
• Provide success coaching to scholarship recipients of the Thompson University Preparatory Academy Scholarship. This includes meeting with students prior to their first semester at GVSU to review their class schedule and make necessary changes.
• Coordinate alumni events in Southeast Michigan for Charter School alumni and Thompson Scholars alumni. Collaborates often with others on campus that support the Thompson & Charter Scholars. This includes working with a variety of offices, including Enrollment Development, Support Services, University Development, Office of Student Life, University Communications, Institutional Marketing, and others.
• Works closely with the Thompson and Charter Scholars teams to assist with any planning and executing of academic, professional, social, and community events for the Thompson & Charter Scholars in Southeast Michigan.
• Performs other duties as required/assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
• Bachelor's Degree
• Minimum three (3) years of experience working with high school or college students, particularly through pre-college or academic support programs
• Strong presentation, interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work collaboratively with students, families, faculty, and staff at all levels in a complex and diverse environment.
• Demonstrated personal and professional commitment to diversity and a solid understanding of and appreciation for cultural, ethnic, and individual differences.
• Detail oriented.
• Ability to work with large amounts of data/information.
• Strong customer service skills.
• Ability to work independently, while also working well in a team environment.
• Familiarity with database software.
• Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality.
• Ability to work evenings and weekend hours as needed.
PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
• Familiarity with major university data systems (Workday, Banner, and OnBase).
• Knowledge of requirements under the Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act.
• Experience working in or collaborating with recruitment and admissions, financial aid, and student success coaching in high school or higher education settings.
WORKING CONDITIONS
This position is based in Detroit, working out of the GVSU Detroit Center as well as GVSU-authorized charter schools in Southeast Michigan. Frequent local travel will be required. Some evenings and weekends may be required.
