Under the direction of the department head and in collaboration with a department management
team, manages and supports the operations, access services, and supporting infrastructure at both the Grand Rapids and Allendale locations. The Manager, Access & Infrastructure Services is responsible for overseeing circulation, resource sharing, and the supervision of full-time staff dedicated to these areas. While the primary work location is the Mary Idema Pew Library, the Manager is also expected to provide regular support to staff at the Steelcase and Frey Libraries. The Manager collaborates closely with the Manager, Public & Engagement Services to ensure seamless service delivery and operational efficiency across all locations. With an emphasis on ensuring inclusive, accessible, quality user services the Manager, Access & Infrastructure Services provides input on the strategy and philosophy of access services and public services. This input will draw on their knowledge of library usage and access service interactions at all Library locations.

in accomplishing work.This position is part of Library Access Support Services (LASS), which is responsible for supporting public-facing and behind-the-scenes functions on campus as well as virtually. The position is based at the Mary Idema Pew Library, but at times may need to flex beyond the standard schedule and locations and may need to be on call for emergencies over the weekend and evenings.This position is essential and will remain onsite during university remote days.

Salary and Benefits:

Minimum starting salary of $55,000, commensurate with experience

Job Duties:

As a Manager within the LASS Department, contributes to its success by:

• Supervising and supporting eight full-time professional support staff positions and additional temporary employees as assigned
• Providing guidance, direction, and coaching. This includes advising staff members on goals and timelines, supporting training, and making opportunities for varied or expanded responsibilities available.
• Actively supporting and encouraging individual growth, initiative, and accountability.
• Meeting regularly in order to guide staff members in aligning work and behaviors with university libraries values, goals, and the curriculum
• Providing regular performance check-ins with timely coaching and formative feedback, including adherence to performance review process
• Leading recruiting, hiring, onboarding, and retention initiatives of library colleagues for the Access Services Team

As a member of the LASS Management team:

• Ensures development and implementation of student-ready and inclusive customer service practices across the Libraries
• Ensures effective operations of locations, partnering with the scheduling coordinators on scheduling strategy and leading the approval of absences and timesheet approval

• Represents the Libraries, participates in university-wide initiatives, and works closely with campus units in areas of assigned responsibility
• Maintains the knowledge necessary to provide support for library operations and services at the Mary Idema Pew Library, Steelcase Library, and Frey Foundation Library
• Working with the Director of LASS, provides vision and strategic direction for each area of assigned responsibility
• Maintains awareness of and executes emergency preparedness procedures and protocol

As the lead for Access Services and Infrastructure:

• Manages circulation services including borrowing, returning, and renewing of library materials, including fines, holds, and recalls.
• In collaboration with Access Services team, develops processes associated with each area of assigned responsibility, including relevant documentation and communication
• In coordination with Systems and Discovery (SaDs), ensures that Library Services Platform operates effectively and that access policies align with university needs. Provides feedback to SaD on how library systems are meeting staff and user needs
• Manages controlled access collections including coordinating service delivery and standards for course reserves, technology lending, and manipulatives.
• Provides project management to ensure that library stacks are user friendly and that collection withdrawal is implemented
• Collaborates with the Resource Sharing Assistant and Coordinator to ensure support for Interlibrary Loan & Resource Sharing including coordinating borrowing and lending of materials between institutions to ensure timely access to resources.
• Works with library staff, including library technical support, and vendors to ensure systems supporting these Access Services functional areas remain operational
• Leads the evidence-based development of reports and recommendations for the purpose of budget, collection maintenance and resource management
• Collaborates with the Knowledge Infrastructure Manager to monitor public services related infrastructure; including the study rooms and the Automated Storage and Retrieval System (ASRS)
• Develops and supports processes, associated with the ASRS
• Troubleshoots issues associated with the ASRS, working with the service technician and the Collections Infrastructure Manager to keep it operational
• Supports mailroom processing and delivery services

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor's Degree
• Supervisory experience or demonstrated ability to lead and manage a team
• Relevant work experience or demonstrated ability to lead and manage processes and workflows
• Ability to communicate effectively and clearly in oral and written communications
• Demonstrated ability to interact with others with respect and empathy through written and verbal communication
• Demonstrated commitment and experience providing outstanding and user-centered public service

• The capacity to thrive and lead in an exciting, agile, future-oriented environment
• Demonstrated ability to work independently, collaboratively, and to promote teamwork among colleagues

Preferred Qualifications

• Significant coursework in one of the following areas: Library and Information Science, systems, logistics, Information Technology, operations.
• Demonstrated experience overseeing a team or organizational function
• Experience with project management involving multiple stakeholders
• Demonstrated creative and innovative problem-identification and problem-solving skills
• Demonstrated facility with data analysis

Standard Hours for this position: Monday-Friday 8:00am - 5:00pm with the ability to provide remote support. Occasional nights and weekends may be necessary.
