Summary: The Chemistry Department at Grand Valley State University has openings for Visiting Faculty to teach lectures and labs in general chemistry as well as organic or biochemistry. The position is full-time for one academic year (mid-August 2025 through the end of April 2026). Visiting faculty positions may be extended for two additional one-year appointments depending on departmental needs and faculty performance. We are particularly interested in receiving applications from candidates from underrepresented groups, and from candidates who have interest and/or experience in working with diverse student and community populations.
Required Qualifications and Education:
• Masters degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or a related discipline.
• Commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching.
• Ability to work in a collaborative environment with a diverse population of colleagues and students.
• Experience in, demonstrated understanding of, or interest in social justice education and/or initiatives, and/or inclusion, diversity, and/or intercultural training.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, such as the ability to interact with others with respect and empathy.
Preferred Qualifications and Education:
• Ph.D in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or a related discipline
• Ability to teach lectures in labs in organic or biochemistry
• Experience in teaching lectures and labs at the college level is especially desirable
• Demonstrated use of student-centered teaching methods
Responsibilities: Responsibilities of visiting faculty include teaching lectures, discussions, and labs for courses assigned based on department needs and the candidate's qualifications. A typical teaching load is 12-15 contact hours per week in lecture, discussion, and lab settings. Mentoring by our experienced tenure-track faculty is provided.
Salary/Benefits
The salary is $55,000. Department/College: The GVSU Department of Chemistry is committed to high-quality undergraduate education, offering Bachelor's degrees in Chemistry and Biochemistry and a Green Chemistry Certificate. We currently have over 40 full-time faculty and staff and serve over 200 chemistry and biochemistry majors along with students from several other science majors.
