SUMMARY

 

The Adjunct Advisor for the Occupational Support Program will be responsible for academic advising, career advising, facilitating career development workshops and events, and overall assistance in moving students towards economic security through preparation of high wage, high skill, and high demand careers. The Occupational Support Program (OSP) works to build career advising and development capacity for all students but especially focuses on students who are interested in pursuing career-focused Associate and Certificate programs. The mission of the Occupational Support Program is to partner with students, academic departments, community resources, and employers to grow students into future employees who can meet the degree requirements, skills and needs of employers in the community.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

 

• Provide resources and communication to support students who are interested or enrolled in career focused academic programs at GRCC.

• Responsible for providing group career advising services and developing electronic career resources to assist students in narrowing their career and post-GRCC goals.

• Responsible for providing holistic career and academic plans for students enrolled in career focused pathways and programs that qualify as high-wage, high demand, and high-skill programs under Perkins V.

• Create career exploration, assessment and partnership opportunities and integrate learning into career and academic choices.

• Maintain current knowledge of requirements related to credit & non-credit academic programs, GRCC degree programs, potential career paths, graduation, transfer and career programs, and courses to help students move toward degree completion.

• Knowledge and use of labor market information and industry-specific competencies to support students in decision making and job-readiness preparation.

• Assist students in aligning career and post-GRCC goals with the best GRCC academic programs.

• Responsible for monitoring and documenting the academic and personal academic progress of students who are eligible as special populations under the Perkins V Grant.

• Connect students to career, work, or skills based experiential learning activities.

• Award financial resources such as tuition grants, book loans, and child care to eligible career-focused students with greatest need as defined by Perkins V Grant and the State of Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity.

• Partner with academic departments and other college offices to develop opportunities for career exploration through job shadowing, informational interviewing, and community and workforce engagement.

• Maintain clear and concise notes to document history of academic advice provided to individual students.

• Teach students to gather and organize accurate, relevant information necessary to their education, career, and personal development.

• Assist students in noticing and developing their strengths, confidence, experience, work-related competencies as it relates to future employment.

• Assist students who meet the Perkins V Special Populations guidelines with financial assistance and attendance costs such as grants, books, and transportation costs.

• Maintain expertise in the advising field.

• Support the initiatives of Student Success and Retention through normal activities of faculty members.

• Representing Occupational Support Program at virtual or in person events during evening or weekend hours.

• Knowledge of current resume, LinkedIn, and job search techniques.

 

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

 

Education Credentials

 

• Bachelor's degree in a relevant field required.

• Masters in Counseling Education, Higher Education, Career and Technical Education, Student Affairs Leadership, Social Work or closely related field preferred.

 

Work Experience

 

• One year of direct experience providing academic advising in a higher education setting or 3 years providing direct student services in a related area in a higher education setting required.

 

Skills

 

• Virtual meeting technology (Zoom, Google Meets)

• Scheduling software

• Able to utilize various technology resources required for the job (including but not limited to G-Suite, scheduling software, ImageNow, EAB Navigate, and Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

 

Physical Demands

 

• Sitting or standing stationary for long periods of time.

• Heavy computer use for communication and documentation

• Ability to navigate virtually and independently move throughout GRCC campus for meetings, appointments, class visits, events..

• Able to effectively communicate verbally, non-verbally, and in written form.

• Ability to independently and effectively operate a computer, use a mouse and/or keyboard, engage in video calls, phone calls, and in person meetings or events

 

Mental Demands

 

• Zoom, phone, and in person advising will be required.

• Positive outlook and flexible mindset to adjust methodology to match the diverse styles, personalities, goals, and needs of students

• Virtual and in-person presentations

• Ability to maintain a positive customer and student-oriented approach in a demanding work environment.

• Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work as part of a team.

• Ability to work under pressure while managing interruptions and changes in priorities on a regular basis.

• Must use good judgment in handling sensitive or difficult situations in a professional manner.

 

Working Conditions

• Faculty assignment may include travel to occasional offsite locations.

• Ability to work in a high traffic, indoor office environment.
