Grand Valley State University invites applications for a one-year Visiting Archivist and Digital Collections Librarian position. Reporting to the Head of Collections and Digital Scholarship, the Visiting Archivist and Digital Collections Librarian supports the operations of the Lemmen Library and Archives, with a focus on the management and preservation of digital collections. They will acquire, process, and maintain archival and special collections material in a variety of formats, in order to support the curriculum and research needs of the Grand Valley State University community.

 

Salary & Benefits: Starting salary of $50,000

Primary Duties:

 

• Collaborates with Lemmen Library and Archives colleagues on acquisitions, processing, preservation, donor relations, and overall collection development

• Leads the development and support of digital collections of rare and unique materials

• Creates and contributes to finding aids, archival metadata, and web content to facilitate the discovery and use of collections

• Manages digital preservation of Lemmen Library and Archives collections using Preservica and other tools

• Collaborates with university partners and library colleagues on digital collections and digital preservation projects

• Manages compliance with copyright and privacy laws in accordance with gift agreements and University policies

• Consults with the appropriate stakeholders in strategic planning, policy making and implementation, and decision making for the unit

• Maintains an awareness of current University, regional, and national trends and keeps abreast of advancements in academic libraries, digital preservation, and archival theory and practice.

• Collaborates with Lemmen Library and Archives colleagues to identify and prepare materials for exhibits, programming, instruction, digitization, or other public service uses

• Assists with archival reference, research services, and outreach as needed

• Coordinates projects for student employees, interns, and volunteers.

 

Required Qualifications and Education:

 

• Master's degree from an ALA-accredited library school or equivalent accredited degree with formal training in archival theory and practice

• Knowledge of best practices, trends, and issues in managing and preserving digital collections

• Familiarity with current national data content and structure standards related to the archival control of collection materials

• Familiarity with archival and library management systems

• Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communications and analytical ability

• Demonstrated ability working collaboratively and independently within a complex organization and rapidly changing team environment

• Ability to effectively engage with students, colleagues, and community members with a broad range of backgrounds and experiences.

• Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds and maneuver a staircase

 

Preferred Qualifications:

 

• Demonstrated job or school experience with archival processing and basic preservation or conservation standards for archival and manuscript collections

• Demonstrated proficiency in use of archival management tools, particularly ArchivesSpace Content Management System, Preservica, and Omeka

• Experience or knowledge of copyright and privacy issues in archives and special collections
